Suez Canal - Focus on Navigational Defects

We would like to draw attention to circular 13/2022 recently published by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and taking effect from 1 April 2022

The circular advises of additional dues of USD 10,000 should certain defects be deliberately withheld from a SCA representative (pilot or harbour master).

We recommend scrutiny of the Suez Canal Rules of Navigation, and consideration of the requirements relating to your vessel type and equipment relating to navigation prior to any transit.

A non-exhaustive list of equipment relating to navigation requirements mentioned in the canal rules is below, and we advise that as a minimum these are confirmed to be free of defects.

  • Main Engine(s)
  • Steering Gear
  • Main Engine Telegraph
  • Rudder Angle Indicator
  • Main Engine RPM Indicator
  • Compasses
  • Radar(s)
  • VHF Radio(s)
  • Suez Canal projector
  • Bridge Wing Search Lights
  • Ships Whistle
  • Navigation lights and day shapes
  • Mooring Ropes
  • Anchors
